Are There Any Doomsday Scenarios Worth Taking Seriously?

December 3rd, 2012

End of the world? Haven’t we all heard that before? We’ve been hearing so much on the news lately about different doomsday stories, it seems to suggest that we are much more intrigued in ending the world than saving it.

It all started during our grandfather’s – and later our father’s – time when H.G. Wells published his famous novel, “War of the Worlds” in 1898. Of all the themes about doomsday scenarios, alien invasions seem to stick the most in people’s minds. War of the Worlds has had the most reprints of any science fiction novel, the most radio broadcasts, and the most television shows and movies made, the most recent one in 2005 starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning.

Alien invasions seem to be a regular favorite – or recurring fear – of doomsday aye sayers. However, much as we know that there is alien life out there, the probability of aliens destroying the earth is a 0.1 in a million shot.

The Nibiru Planet is another doomsday theory. In the late 1960′s, Zechariah Sitchin suggested in his book that Nibiru is a wayward planet with an erratic orbit that can only be seen every 3,700 years. Many doomsday theorists computed that it will make an appearance early in the 21st century and the planet will collide with earth. However, there is very little evidence about even the existence of Nibiru, making this theory a 0.1 in a million shot.

In 2009, the film “2012” highlighted the fears of doomsday sayers about the end of the world as predicted by the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21, 2012. Many scientists now have debunked this theory, pointing out simply that, like any normal calendar, when its cycle of years runs out, you have to start from the beginning again. Together with this theory, the death of the sun and a magnetic pole shift have also been debunked as part of the end of the world scenarios in 2012.

Super volcanoes have recently captured the news because scientists have proven beyond reasonable doubt that the wiping out of many species on earth have been linked with the environmental disasters of exploding super volcanoes. One thing with this theory though is that a lot of super volcanoes the size of Yellowstone Park or bigger need to blow up at the same time for this to happen. While this may have occurred millions of ages ago to wipe out the dinosaurs, the next series of explosions might not happen for a billion years.

Back in the days of the cold war from the 60′s to the early 90′s, World War 3 and a nuclear war fallout were the highlights of doomsday scenarios and Hollywood films. Today, the likelihood that any country would use a nuclear missile against its enemy is unlikely because of the advances in political behavior and psychology. While the possibility of terrorists setting off nuclear bombs is plausible, it’s not enough to end the world.

The finite peaking of oil together with an environmental collapse perhaps serves as the nearest thing to doomsday. Every oil expert concedes that oil production will soon peak and then run out, adding to the sudden collapse of the environment due to pollution, deforestation, global warming, and the like. Again, these theories, though given a 7 in a million shot chance of happening, still has holes in it. Oil will eventually run out, but, the endless possibilities of other energy resources negates its negative effects. Should our environment tilt towards the worse, Mother Nature seems to always have a way of refurbishing itself. This is not to say that people won’t suffer or die because of environmental disasters. Many will, but, it won’t be enough to spell the end of the world.

So are there any scenarios that may portent the real end of the world? Take note we didn’t include those so-called Biblical Armageddon prophets who claim to know the computations from the Book of Revelation. We’ve had enough of their mass hysteria causing unnecessary panic.

A recent news item on the inevitable collision of the Andromeda galaxy with the Milky Way is one of only two apocalyptic astronomical predictions that we can be absolutely certain of. The other is the death of our sun. Both are inevitable because they are scientifically proven to happen whether calculated or as a determinant. Two galaxies have gravity pulls which will eventually bring a collision of both galaxies or elements in it. The sun is a very large solar battery that will eventually run out of energy and burn itself out.

So when are these two inevitable doomsday occurrences scheduled? Well, a collision of galaxy elements may start happening 4 billion years from now. The sun winking out? Around 6 billion years from now.

We are now asking the doomsday scenarists to please quiet down and, as Mr. Spock in Star Trek would say, “live long and prosper.”

Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) set to devastate Cagayan de Oro City

December 2nd, 2012

…and we thought Sendong was bad. Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) is expected to pass directly over Cagayan de Oro City as a Category 2 with sustained winds of 155 to 170 kmh Whereas Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) had negligible winds, it caused it
s devastation through pounding us with 2 days of heavy rain, Pablo could potentially cause the same flooding but it will cause a lot of wind damage that was not present with Sendong.

Hurricane Katrina passed directly over me in South Florida in 2005, and I went outside and walked the beach as the calm of the eye of the storm passed directly over me. Katrina later devastated New Orleans. A month later Hurricane Wilma, after crossing Florida from West to East caused a lot more damage as a Category 2 storm even though the eye of that storm passed about 20 km North of me. Katrina gave me 6 days without power, and Wilma gave me 11 days without power. (Although I had a generator, the problem was getting fuel for it, so I ended up going long periods without any power, for lack of fuel.)

The public utility infrastructure is much stronger in South Florida than it is in Northern Mindanao, so I expect there will be a lot more damage here than last year and the devastation will begin tomorrow, less than 24 hours from now. I will stock up on diesel for my generators.

One of the worst causes of damage from these types of storms is the debris carried by the wind. Much of the debris comes as buildings get ripped apart by the wind, and this debris, when it strikes other buildings, caused them to shed building materials also, adding even more wind borne debris.

Imagine a sheet of plywood hitting your house at 150 kph.

Florida has a long history of being hit by strong Hurricanes and the building codes there have been changed to help prevent the buildings from being ripped apart by the strong winds. Cagayan de Oro has no such building codes for a Typhoon like Pablo. The city is going to be ripped apart.

Stay away from windows. Exploding window glass can kill just as easily as your roof caving in on you. Winds will come from all directions as the storm transits the city, so all sides of free standing buildings will be subject to the high winds.

Batten down CdO. This storm is going to be a killer. Cover your windows. Burn loose wood and building debris now. Stock up on mineral water.

Down With The Sickness Lyrics — by Disturbed

July 20th, 2012

(Do you feel that?)
(Oh shit)
Ooh ah ah ah ah
Ooh ah ah ah ah

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing
Broken your servant I kneel
(Will you give it to me?)
It seems what’s left of my human side
Is slowly changing in me
(Will you give it to me?)

Looking at my own reflection
When suddenly it changes
Violently it changes
Oh no, there is no turning back now
You’ve woken up the demon in me

Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me

Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up
Come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up
Come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me

I can see inside you, the sickness is rising
Don’t try to deny what you feel
(Will you give it to me?)
It seems that all that was good has died
And is decaying in me
(Will you give it to me?)

It seems you’re having some trouble
In dealing with these changes
Living with these changes
Oh no, the world is a scary place
Now that you’ve woken up the demon in me

Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me

Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up
Come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up
Come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me

And when I dream
And when I dream
And when I dream
And when I dream

No mommy, don’t do it again
Don’t do it again
I’ll be a good boy
I’ll be a good boy, I promise

No mommy don’t hit me, oh-ooh
Why did you have to hit me like that mommy?
Don’t do it! You’re hurting me, oh-ooh
Why did you have to be such a bitch?

Why don’t you, why don’t you fuck off and die?
Why can’t you just fuck off and die?
Why can’t you just leave here and die?
Never stick your hand in my face again bitch
Fuck you

I don’t need this shit
You stupid sadistic abusive fucking whore
Would you like to see how it feels mommy?
Here it comes, get ready to die

Ooh ah ah ah ah
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me

Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up
Come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up
Come on get down with the sickness
Madness has now come over me

Waiting for Doomsday: Is Man Creating His Own Extinction through Poisoned Oceans?

July 8th, 2012

About two or three weeks ago, another “doomsday scenario” item made the news headlines. The claim is that one of the factors that led to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and almost half the species on earth was the mass explosion of “super” volcanoes that caused massively increased carbon dioxide levels on the earth’s environment that eventually killed off almost 90% of land and ocean species existing at that time.

Another recent scenario in the news that is nearer to being realistic is the Poisonous Seawater theory that is also a factor to mass species extinctions. This is more realistic because, unlike the volcanoes which may or may not erupt, man is capable of inflicting the poisonous seawater doomsday on himself.

The actual cause of the oceans going poisonous 65 million years ago was due to a Mt. Everest-sized asteroid impacting into the Yucatan Peninsula and the ensuing metallic and superheated debris falling into the oceans in the Northern Hemisphere. The result on land was firestorms, darkness, and deadly carbon dioxide levels and gases that wreaked havoc for life on land.

More, however, was happening in the oceans. 93% of nannoplankton – the base of all marine food – began to die off and eventually go extinct. This is due to the imbalance photosynthesis caused by all the dust and smoke kicked up by the asteroid on land and finding its way to the oceans. Another factor is the super-heated metallic debris from the asteroid made up of copper, chromium, aluminum, mercury, and lead, which fell into the oceans that inhibited plankton growth and recovery.

Luckily, all plankton made a comeback after only 250,000 years.

It is noteworthy to consider that many scientists now are raising alarm bells because man is more than capable of poisoning or killing off the ocean’s species by throwing all kinds of trash and toxic brews into the waters.

In the super volcano scenarios, the continuous and prolonged spewing into the atmosphere of mega-doses of carbon dioxide and toxic hydrogen sulfide from hundreds of super volcanoes triggered a sort of global warming. As the oceans warmed up, they could not hold as much oxygen and so temperatures over both water and land continued to increase. Eventually, more and more hydrogen sulfide took over, slowly killing off plant and animal life.

As man continues to poison the oceans, the waters warm up, producing bacteria that will also produce hydrogen sulfide. These can then be stirred up to the surface by hurricanes or cyclones. Though the toxic gas release is less intense, nonetheless it can increase annually and remain on the surface to slowly kill off species over a period of generations. Eventually, man will feel the effects of these sulfide toxic gasses.

An Extraordinary Species: Were Our Ancestors Protective of the Natural Environment?

June 26th, 2012

Regardless of whether man as a species was created by a god, evolved from the apes – chimpanzee rather (or a common ancestor) – or was cloned by aliens, one thing really stands out with man; it is inherent and normal for Homo Sapiens Sapiens to be destructive of his natural surroundings and of his own species.

This behavior should be proof enough that by instinct we are creatures of survival. We tend to utilize everything around us for our benefit with the resulting destruction of our surroundings. When faced with clear and present danger or sometimes, even perceived ones, we tend to obliterate others for our self preservation.

What many do not realize today is that the universally accepted concept that our pre-modern ancestors and their ancient societies were great respecters of nature and avoided exploiting natural resources to the point of irreparable damage is simply bogus. Historical and archeological evidence points to the very contrary. Man’s ancient ancestors repeatedly destroyed the species they encountered and the environment they lived in. When they failed to do so it was generally not out of respect for the environment but simply because they were so few in number and their technology was not far enough advanced to enable them to do so.

The remains of ancient empires and their symbols such as the Egyptian Pyramids, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Inca Pyramids, and the Roman Empire all attest to ancient man’s exploitation of its natural environment. To move the massive stone blocks of the Pyramids, acres of forest trees had to be cut down to serve as rollers, levers, and pulleys. The long road system of the Roman Empire which connected provinces end to end meant leveling at least 3,000 acres of forest land to make way for the stone roadways.

The discovery of agriculture is in itself one of the disasters that would befall nature and its environment. While this discovery has led to better health, longevity, and security, its destructiveness on nature is counterproductive to its benefits to man. Acres upon acres of natural forest land are often leveled to make way for the planting of single root crops. Repeated harvesting and replanting has resulted in the depletion of soil nutrients. Because of this, man has resulted in turning to artificial means of crop maintenance such as fertilizers and pesticides. Only now are we realizing that the chemicals that we are consistently pumping into the soil and plants are slowly worming their way into our bodily systems.

Our ancient ancestors were no better than their modern cousins in terms of respecting the environment, not to mention the fact that a discovery meant to feed more people in better and more quantitative ways is actually more destructive to man than beneficial.

Many historians even argue that the introduction of agriculture eventually brought about class differences and large-scale wars. This is in addition to corporate profiteering and crop surplus wastage. But, that is another story, and another post.

American cage fighter ‘rips out still-beating heart of training partner after fearing he was possessed by the devil’

June 6th, 2012

By Paul Thompson
UPDATED: 13:09 GMT, 1 June 2010

Jarrod WyattArrested: Jarrod Wyatt was allegedly found standing naked over his dead friend’s body in a room bathed in blood

A U.S. cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil, it was alleged today.

Jarrod Wyatt also cut out Taylor Powell’s tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film, officers said.

They claim they found the 26-year-old standing naked over his friend’s body with parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room in Klamath, California.

Wyatt allegedly told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced Powell was possessed.

According to an autopsy Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out.

The coroner said Powell had been alive when the organ was ripped out after his chest had been sliced open with a knife.

Wyatt told the police he thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body, it was claimed.

He allegedly told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Powell was still alive and he ‘needed to stop the Devil’.

Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested wild mushroom tea.

Justin Davis told police he returned to the flat to find Wyatt naked and covered from head to toe in blood.

He noticed an eyeball lying in the middle of the floor and saw Powell’s mutilated body.

A lawyer representing Wyatt has claimed the wild mushrooms caused him to act in such a violent way and had not control over his actions.

‘My client was trying to silence the devil,’ said James Fallman.

‘I think he was having a psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had.’

Wyatt has been charged with first degree murder and torture.

Prosecutors added the torture charge as Powell was still alive when his heart was removed.

What Really Happened Back There?

June 5th, 2012

I heard a guy talking bad to me in English, so I turned around.  It was someone I know, driving a brand new Hilux with 3 brand new dirt bikes in the back.  I thought to call my attorney or the police and reached for my phone, the asshole racked the slide on a semi-automatic pistol.

The security guard pumped his shotgun and put his back to the driver’s door, but the driver managed to squeeze his foot to the running board and his elbow out the side of the door.

So I ran full throttle into the car door.  Then the guy took off and did a donut around the Caltex fuel pumps and came right at me.  I was prepared to jump straight up to avoid getting  hit, but at the last moment he swerved and I was able to push off the front of the hood.  I got thrown about 4 meters, spun in the air, and landed facing the same direction I had been in before.  Only my elbow and hip were bruised by the front fender of the Hilux.

Later on I asked, “what the hell happened back there?”

A couple of weeks later I pulled up at one of maybe a dozen traffic lights in CdO and saw a nice big bike.  As I looked up I saw a guy wearing racing leathers on a Dukati.  It was the same guy that hit me with the truck.  This time though he pulled a gun and fired at me one handed.  I heard the pow and saw the flash but never felt any impact.

I punched it in 1st gear and 180′d and fell in behind the now fleeing Dukati driver and chased him until he did a u-turn at too high a speed and crashed his bike.  He was able to pick it up and take off faster than I could back up and run his dumb ass over.

Later on I asked, “what the hell happened back there?”

I was shown this film with 11 other people.  There were people in a circle throwing volleyballs, bouncing them, back and forth to each other.  We were instructed to count how many times the balls where thrown.   The video lasted about two minutes.  I counted 97 ball tosses, some people were a a couple higher than me and a couple lower.  We were never told how many balls were actually thrown.  That was not the test.

After we gave in our written down results we were asked if any of of saw the gorilla.  None of us had seen a gorilla in the video.  The instructor then told us to ignore the balls being tossed and watch the same video again, but this time look for the gorilla.  About 14 seconds after the video started a man dressed in a gorilla suit came into the middle of the video and stared at the camera, even making some gorilla-like gestures.  The gorilla was there for almost the maybe 20 seconds video.

Since the video was played from a computer and we could see the file being selected and played we could tell it was the same video we had just watched, everything else was the same.  Why had none of us seen the Gorilla?

I think all of us would have sworn in court that we did not see the gorilla.

Later on I asked, “what the hell happened back there?”
