Movielink, Online Movie Downloads
I like going to the movies, but I don’t get to see all of the ones I want to see in the theatre, and there are some that I want to watch but don’t care to see in the theatre, I’d rather just watch them at home as time permits, in between working on blog posts or other activities I do on a regular basis. Also, I don’t always like to sit through a whole movie all at one time. The traditional solution over the past ten years has be Blockbuster, but in the past year some movie download sites have come out, where you can rent and download movies online. I signed up with MovieLink and I was pretty happy with their service until coming to The Philippines.
In preparation for my trip I rented and downloaded some movies from MovieLink to watch while in The Philippines. Well, it turns out MovieLink does not work in the Philippines: I can’t even access their website. And the movie manager software doesn’t work here either, so now I have a bunch of movies I can’t watch taking up lots of hard drive space on my PC. Because the movie manager soft doesn’t work, I can’t delete the files. If there’s help available for this on the MovieLink site, it does me no good as I can’t access their site with a Philippines IP address.
(disclaimer: sure, I can fix this myself via some VPN/American-IP tricks and going into specific program folders, but the average user would be stuck with a bunch of unused movies on their hard drive. I’m actually pretending to be an average user with MovieLink Support to see if they can tell me how to fix this. Let’s give them a couple of days to get back to me before we give them the thumbs-up or thumbs-down.)
UPDATE: MovieLink tech support advised me to uninstall their program to clean my hard drive and that when I get back to The States, I can reinstall it and they’ll reset the movies I previously bought/rented. I’ll have to download them again, but with smoking Comcast cable at 8 Mb/sec, that won’t take long.

michael, i love your blog and it’s very typical of an American living in the Philippines. I spent all my life in Manila and moved to the USA 2 yrs ago. Let me know if you need help with your computers, wireless and other networking stuff. I maybe able to help no charge.
