Lost Horizon Beach Resort, Panglao Island, Bohol
Kirk, the photo masking king of The Philippines recommended Lost Horizon Beach Resort in Bohol, on Panglao Island, good advice I’m happy to share.
Lost Horizon is a small hotel on Panglao Island, Alona Beach, and they offer free WiFi to their guest, scoring beaucoup bonus points with me. The room cost was about P2500 (~$50) per night, and our entire stay there, including meals and laundry came to only P10,500 (~$200).
Lost Horizon does not have a swimming pool, but Alona Beach Resort, just down the beach and five times the price does have a pool. Alona Beach Resort wants P400 (~$8) for non-guests to swim in their pool. My suggestion is to stay at Lost Horizon and rent the pool.

If you need a pool get across the island to Panglao Island Nature Reserve Php350 to get in (Php250 back in consumables - meal/drinks)
Pool is set into cliffside overlooking beach and manmade (I think) mini island
PINR is BEST resort on island, I tried 5 or 6, make a FULL day of it

WHERE NOT TO STAY IN BOHOL:
LOSE YOUR MONEY AND TEMPER AT LOST HORIZON!
What we planned out to be a relaxing and stress-free 3 days and 2 nights at LOST HORIZON in Panglao, Bohol turned out to be the worst-nightmare-of-a-vacation we ever experienced! How appropriate that the resort name is LOST HORIZON. We LOST our money during our may 11-13, 2009 stay there because their roomboy, with the blessing of their receptionist, entered and made up our room despite our specific instructions that no one was to enter our room while we were out island hopping. And their resort personnel were so LOST that they inefficiently handled their own investigation of the matter despite the police investigator’s acknowledgement that their resort had lapses in their services. And where was the owner, Mr. Duane Blumenshein, who should have been on top of the situation and attending to the problems of the resort? LOST and missing in action while his employees acted like rats scurrying to their ratholes while we suffer our LOSS. Imagine, the resort people do not know who their manager is, where their owner is and how to reach him! They kept avoiding us when we were asking for updates regarding their investigation and their management of the situation. They kept delaying their supposed decision/resolution up until check-out time when they told us, they wanted another investigation and they were not responsible for our loss. No recovered money, NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY for our lost money. How stressful could it get? While we LOST only our money, their resort LOST face and integrity among tourists and visitors. We will make sure that everybody learns of our terrible experience in their terrible resort and book at other trustworthy resorts in Panglao. So tourists will never lose their valuables in a resort like theirs. LOST HORIZON is a SHAME to the Panglao resorts and to Bohol. Beware ye tourists because THIEVERY and STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE are specialty services at LOST HORIZON.

I am sorry to hear about what happened to you. It’s been nearly three years since I stayed there and I’m sure most of the staff have changed. You did make a few mistakes here, however. I mean, you can kind of blame it all on the staff there, but that’s not a realistic way of looking at it. I do not know how much you lost, but let’s say it was 40,000 pesos and the room boy makes 3000 pesos a month, then 40,000 pesos is more than he makes in a year. That is some stunning temptation. I know if someone left $1 million USD laying around and I was pretty sure I could get away with taking it, there would be some pretty strong tugs on my behavior and morals from the dark side. So, you do need to realize that if you are staying at Lost Horizon, or any beach resort on Panglao Island, then you are definitely considered RICH by more than 95% of Filipinos.
So, one mistake was leaving money in the room. I left a couple of laptops in the room, but they were set up and it looked like we might walk in at any time. Leave the laptop on with the screen saver running in hotels. Another mistake you probably made was telling the hotel staff you did not want anyone entering your room while you were gone. That sounds to me like a sure sign that you left something in the room of great and tempting value. You probably told the receptionist you didn’t want anyone in your room while you were gone. As soon as you did leave she probably sent the room boy to the room to find out what you had in there. If you do have to leave money in a hotel room, get one of those Coke cans with the screw-off bottom and put your money in there and stash it with a few other cans. So, it is not just Lost Horizon that is the problem here. It’s a decent low-cost resort for Panglao Island and as long as you don’t do something stupid like leave a big wad of cash in the room, you’ll probably enjoy your stay just fine.
