Death at Park Cafe

Three men were at Park Cafe in Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City, a few days ago, and they made the mistake of teasing one of the street-kids. One of the homeless unfortunate kids that live on the street. From what I’ve heard he was likely a rugby addict. Rugby is, as best I understand it, shoe glue. It’s cheap, it’s an inhaled drug, and it’s addicting.

I had a buddy back in highschool that used to huff gasoline. He’d put his mouth over the neck of a two-gallon gasoline can and suck in the fumes. Then he’d just smile and pass the can, like I wanted some too. He died my first year of college and I don’t remember anyone being either surprised or upset about his death.

Anyway, these fellows are sitting at Park Cafe, teasing this homeless rugby addict, and the kid tells them he’ll go get his friends and be right back. The fellows just stay where they are. Afterall, this is just some pre-pubescent street kid who is not in his right mind.

The kid comes back with several of his collegues and together they stab the three fellows that were doing the teasing. Two of them die from stab wounds to the heart. One is in a coma.

The cousin of one of the men that died works for me. When I get more detailed information I’ll update this post.

When I told my attorney about this, he commented that last February The Philippines government passed a law that says no child under the age of 14 will have any criminal liability for any thing he many do. This means that even if the police were to catch the kids who did this, they would be quickly set free, as soon as their ages were verified.

The Philippines: Love it or leave it.

Update: May 2, 2007

There were just two victims. The event occured on Saturday morning between 2 and 3 AM. The two guys had gone to Pulse, which is a relatively newly remodeled club that opened where Xcite (the place where I met Marissa, my wife) used to be. They were a bit intoxicated. As they were walking to Divisoria Park they were were accosted by one of the local rugby kids that acted like he wanted to fight them. They ignored him and sat down at Park Cafe. Five minutes later the kid came up to them and again wanted to fight with them. They continued to ignore him. The kid left and came back about 15 minutes later with 14 other of his rugby buddies.

One of the two men ran away and escaped with 11 ice-pick type wounds in his back. He has healed enough that he is back working now. The other one received a 3-inch stab wound in his back, and a stab wound in his leg. He also had cuts on his hands, probably from trying to defend himself. He bled to death. He had false teeth and these were found in his pocket, which seems to indicate he may have put them in his pocket in anticipation of fighting with these kids.

There was no third man, no one is in a coma. The police have five of the kids in custody, of which only one has admitted his involvement in the murder.

I abhor our justice system here. These teen-age criminals are increasing in number and it seems like the government do nothing about it. DSWD rehabs are not enough to discipline these kids.Police visibility around Divisoria must be consistent and diligently monitored. Death because of these kids is plainly intolerable.
