Philippines Terrorism

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

(Contributed by Ron Van Orden)
Several weeks back there was a bomb placed at a bus terminal Cotabato. Hanger-arounders and travelers were killed. The ‘reports’ were that it was an incidence of ‘Muslim’ violence. Embassy warnings were churning from several countries…
Turns out it was just a bunch of guys who were extorting money from the bus [...]

Driving in The Philippines

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I’ve been driving in The Philippines for several months now, primarily on a 2007 Honda Wave 125. Although I also have a 2007 Honda XRM 110, I rarely ride it. This past weekend was the St. John’s Fiesta in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental. This was to be my third visit to Jimenez, [...]

Cagayan de Oro, Safest City in Mindanao

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro last month. This is the, I think, the 4th or 5th oldest Rotary Club in The Philippines, established April 22, 1948. Older clubs are in Manila, Cebu, Davao, and maybe Iloilo. There are 14 Rotary Clubs in Cagayan de Oro. [...]

Kia 2700 Double Cabin Truck

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

It’s not exactly a pickup truck like one of my old ‘74 or ‘78 4×4 Dodge Power Wagons, or my ‘72 C20 Chevy 3/4-ton hotrod, but for The Philippines it looks like the perfect truck for me. It’s the Kia 2700 4×4.

This 6-seater can carry a 2-ton payload, and retails for PHP 818,000.00. [...]

House Blessing

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Getting motorcycles blessed is just not enough. With my wife, Marissa, pregnant, I had to get the house blessed, too.

This blessing was done by a priest from the Philippine Independent Church (IFI, Spanish for Iglesia Filipina Independiente). The major difference between it and the Roman Catholic Church, from what I can tell, is that [...]

Motorcycle Blessing

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

After buying a pair of 2007 Honda XRM 110 underbone scooters (motorcycles), and a 2007 Honda Wave 125, I was informed my my wife and in-laws that I needed to have them blessed by a priest, to keep them and their riders safe from harm. I don’t know if anyone has gathered any statistics [...]

Billiards in Cagayan de Oro

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

When I first came to Cagayan de Oro back in 2004 I began going to Ralf’s Sports Bar, where there are five full-sized pool tables. To shoot some pool and to meet some people. I like some things about Ralfs, but there’s a lot of stuff I don’t like. The bathrooms are [...]

New bridge in Cagayan de Oro

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

The new bridge is getting close to completion.

Whether that’s just a couple of months from now or more than six months is beyond my guess.

If the same bride were to the same stage of completion in South Florida it would probably open to traffic in less than a month.

The previous three photos are all of [...]
