Mindanao Olympics 2007, Cagayan de Oro
After leaving the morning session of the Rotary Community Corps & Membership Development Seminar on the morning of October 19, 2007, I skipped lunch and proceeded to the Pelaez Sports Center to watch the opening ceremonies parade of amateur athletes of the Mindanao Olympics.
It did not appear to me that the Mindanaod Olympics really represented all of Mindanao, because it was mostly local schools that particpated. Perhaps there are other Mindanao Olympics held in Davao, Zamboanga, and other cities on Mindanao Island.
I was invited to attend the opening ceremonies a Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro friend, Michael Auxillio, who performed one of his own compositions while running around the track playing the violin. It seems most of the students already knew Michael Auxillio as he has taught music at many of the schools in the area at some time in the recent past.
Unfortunately, I did not stay to watch the various contests. However I took as many photos and actually had three cameras running during the opening ceremonies.
Another friend of mine, and fellow batch-mate into the mother-club Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro, along with Michael Auxillio (and Colonel Doi Trampe), was Uriel Quilinquing (sounds like “killing king”), above, who is the Executive Editor for the Cagayan de Oro Golden Chronicle, and President of the ORO Press Club.
